It is easy to boil down the prediction of success to scores on standardize tests, such as a famous I.Q one. By moving away from the traditional narrow band of cognitive skills measured on standardized tests, we take a deeper journey into how to fail, build character, think and succeed. Paul Tough, former contributor of the New York Times, brings us a fresh perspective on how to foster the power of grit, curiosity and resilience in our children. Are the children with the highest test scores more likely to succeed in life? As the United States spend over $550 billion a year on public elementary and secondary education, this question is always on the forefront of political campaigns and controversy. ![]() ![]() Stevenson is so noble and flawless that he’s a credible bore unless you focus on Jordan’s physicality. ![]() This is built into Woodard’s character intrinsically, but for Jordan, it feels more like an actor doing his best to rise above the paper-thin characterization he has been given. Jordan’s activist Bryan Stevenson is trying to get prisoners off the row while Alfre Woodard’s warden Bernadine Williams oversees their executions-the two actors each have moments of stillness where they seem to physically vibrate from the internal trauma they’re suppressing. Though the lead characters differ in intent- Michael B. “Just Mercy” has the misfortune of hitting theaters at the same time as “ Clemency,” a more daring and better film set on a prison’s Death Row. These include a sense of control over what's happening, a clear goal, feedback on progress, and a sense of flow itself being intrinsically rewarding. ![]() In his book "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience", Csikszentmihalyi lays out the factors that contribute to flow. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's other work includes studying creativity and happiness. In flow, something fascinating happens to our conscious awareness and with it, the line between our unconscious or subconscious becomes very faint. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1934 and has written extensively on the concept of flow, or the state of being completely absorbed in an activity. The state of flow was coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and has become a popular topic in corporate life and the sports arena. In positive psychology, a flow state is also known as being in "the zone." Flow occurs when a person's skills match the level of challenge involved in the activity at hand. This is characterised by the ego slipping away and a feeling of great focus, concentration, motivation, energy and enjoyment. In this state, people are fully immersed in what they are doing. You may have experienced this whilst managing a workplace task, talking to a friend or participating in a hobby, or when an event challenges you to step just outside your comfort zone. When you're in a flow state, your knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs are managed so well that you can completely focus on the task at hand. ![]() ![]() ![]() In any case, one thing remains clear: Poe’s writing lends itself easily to visual interpretation. The poem twines together inextricably both the surliness and the grief into something altogether recognizable: a kindred spirit. Somewhere in there, I think, is the seed of his continued popularity. Indeed, in a CNN interview given last year, John Cusack (yes – that John Cusack) talked about Poe as representing “some sort of collective sorrow.” His work couples the melodramatics of a surly teenager with the unyielding grief you might expect in the lone survivor of a car wreck. It’s not hard to understand why Poe’s writing draws such strong reactions. In life he struggled to feed himself, but in death he’s universally acknowledged as the father of a somewhat obscure literary genre called detective fiction – maybe you’ve heard of it? Arthur Conan Doyle calls Poe’s stories “a model for all time,” while Ralph Waldo Emerson summarily dismissed “The Raven” in a single sentence: “I can see nothing in it.” In his day, he was respected (or at least feared) as a critic, but as a writer he was every critic’s favorite whipping boy. (He was also my middle school’s namesake – go Ravens!) In the canon of American literature, though, Poe cuts a more protean figure, as equally beloved as he is derided. His stories are strange and rich his poems are satisfyingly moody. I’ve always had a hazy kind of affection for Edgar Allan Poe. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In her memories, we glimpse the roots of her compassion and shame, intertwined.
